At Shaftesbury CE Primary School we use letters and sounds to teach phonics. In our EYFS classes we follow the Jolly phonics scheme. The teaching of phonics is supplemented by the use of various games and interactive activities from other schemes too.
Each class is assessed and split into small groups so that children are taught within the appropriate phase. At all times children work within their class group. Assessment is continuous and children will be moved between the groups as they are ready.
Children are taught how to break down words into their individual sounds in order to read and how to put sounds together for writing.
KS2 children who still require phonics input will be taught in very small groups with their peers.
Year 1 children will take a phonics screening check in June. Parents will be informed of the results with the annual school report.
Parents are invited into school to learn about the teaching phonics during the school year.
